Defect Depth

Scratches and swirl marks can vary significantly in both their depth and severity, and this determines whether they can be safely reduced or removed through paint correction. Very fine surface marks and swirl marks typically affect the upper portion of the clear coat and can often be significantly reduced or removed through polishing.

Deeper scratches can extend further into the clear coat and may require more intensive correction, such as a combination of cutting and refining. If a scratch has penetrated completely through the clear coat and into the base coat, primer or metal, machine polishing cannot safely remove it because the missing paint cannot be restored through polishing.

The deeper the defect, the greater the risk of removing too much clear coat. The aim is always to achieve the maximum safe improvement rather than simply chasing complete removal of every scratch.

How & Why We Measure

Paint Thickness.

Before machine polishing, we assess the paint thickness across the vehicle using a professional paint thickness gauge. This allows us to assess the overall thickness of the paint system, identify significant variations between panels and recognise areas that may require a more conservative approach. Differences in readings can also help highlight panels that may have been previously repaired or resprayed.

Paint thickness readings help us make informed decisions about how aggressively we can polish each area. Not every panel has the same thickness, and previous correction work or paint repairs may affect the amount of clear coat remaining, but a paint thickness gauge measures the total paint system rather than the clear coat alone. This is why readings are considered alongside visual inspection, panel history and test spots. By measuring before we begin, we can tailor our polishing approach to the condition of the vehicle rather than treating every panel in exactly the same way.

The objective is not to remove as much clear coat as possible. Machine polishing removes a microscopic amount of material from the upper surface of the clear coat, so preserving as much of the original paint system as reasonably possible is an important part of responsible paint correction.

The Process

What happens when we polish your vehicle.

When we polish your vehicle, we use a combination of a machine polisher, polishing pad and fine abrasive compounds to remove an extremely small, controlled amount of material from the upper surface of the clear coat. This process gradually levels the microscopic imperfections within the clear coat, such as fine scratches, swirl marks and light surface defects, allowing light to reflect more evenly from the paintwork.

The result is a smoother, clearer and more refined surface with improved gloss and depth. Because the clear coat is a finite layer, our approach is always to remove as little material as reasonably necessary to achieve the desired improvement, rather than unnecessarily thinning the paintwork.

Does paint correction remove scratches completely?
Not always. The depth of a scratch determines whether it can be safely corrected. Defects contained within the clear coat can often be significantly reduced or removed, while deeper scratches that penetrate into the colour coat, primer or body panel may require different repair methods.
How do I know if my scratch can be polished out?
A professional assessment is required. As a general rule, if the damage has penetrated beyond the clear coat, polishing alone cannot completely repair it. We assess the defect and aim to achieve the best possible improvement without unnecessarily removing clear coat.
Does paint correction remove clear coat?
Yes, but only an extremely small amount when performed correctly. Machine polishing levels the upper surface of the clear coat to reduce imperfections and create a smoother, more uniform finish. The objective is always to remove as little material as reasonably necessary.
Will paint correction damage my paint?
When carried out correctly using the appropriate pad, compound, machine, technique and working time, paint correction can be performed safely. However, every vehicle has different paint thickness and condition, which is why we assess the paint before deciding how aggressively to correct it.
Can every scratch be removed?
No. Some scratches are too deep to safely remove through polishing. Attempting to completely remove a deep defect could require removing too much clear coat and potentially cause permanent damage. In these situations, we prioritise safe improvement rather than chasing 100% correction.
Why do I still see some scratches after correction?
Some defects may be too deep to safely remove, while others may be beneath the clear coat. Our aim is to maximise correction while preserving the integrity of the paintwork.
What is the difference between a one-stage, two-stage and three-stage correction?
Some defects may be too deep to safely remove without compromising the clear coat. If a scratch has penetrated into the colour coat or deeper, polishing cannot restore the missing material. In these situations, we prioritise a safe reduction in appearance rather than risking unnecessary clear-coat removal.
Does paint correction make the paint thinner?
Paint correction removes a very small amount of material from the clear coat. Because the clear coat is a finite protective layer, repeated or unnecessarily aggressive correction can reduce its thickness. This is why professional correction should focus on achieving the required result while preserving as much clear coat as possible.
Can paint correction remove swirl marks?
Yes. Swirl marks are typically shallow defects within the clear coat and can often be significantly reduced or removed through machine polishing, depending on their severity and the condition of the paint.
Can paint correction remove oxidation?
Light to moderate oxidation can often be improved through polishing, depending on the paint system and severity. Heavily degraded paint may require more extensive restoration or refinishing.
Does paint correction remove stone chips?
No. Stone chips generally penetrate through the paint system and cannot be polished away. They may instead require touch-up or a separate paint-repair process.
Does paint correction protect my car?
Paint correction itself is primarily a refinement process rather than a protective coating. Once the paint has been corrected, a sealant, wax or ceramic coating can be applied to provide additional protection.
Should I ceramic coat my car after paint correction?
It can be an excellent combination. Paint correction creates a refined surface, while a ceramic coating provides a durable protective layer over the finished paintwork. This can also make the vehicle easier to maintain.
Can paint correction remove water spots?
Light water-spot etching can sometimes be reduced or removed through polishing. However, if mineral deposits have chemically etched deeply into the clear coat, complete removal may not be safely possible.
How long does paint correction last?
The corrected finish itself does not have an expiry date, but the condition of the paint depends heavily on how the vehicle is washed and maintained. Poor washing techniques can gradually introduce new swirl marks and defects.
Will the car stay swirl-free after correction?
Not necessarily. Paint correction removes existing defects, but new defects can be introduced through incorrect washing, drying or maintenance. Proper aftercare is essential to preserve the finish.
Is paint correction suitable for a new car?

How many times can my car have paint correction?
There is no universal number. It depends on the thickness and condition of the clear coat and how aggressively previous corrections have been performed. Because clear coat is finite, unnecessary correction should be avoided.
